  • Improving Pronunciation in English Workshop

Workshop Objectives

Students will gain an understanding of why pronunciation is an important aspect of communicating in English and increase confidence by focusing on clear pronunciation and proper stress and intonation by:

      • Identifying and producing different consonant and vowel sounds in English through a review of sounds with a focus on long/short vowel sounds and L/R consonant sounds
      • Recognizing and using proper word stress in English words through syllable practice with stressed and unstressed syllables
      • Understanding how stressing different words in a sentence can change the meaning of that sentence
      • Identifying student’s own individual pronunciation difficulties and developing personalized strategies to improve using online tools (e.g. dictionaries, apps)

Workshop Objectives:
a) Learn how to structure their presentations effectively to convey their message clearly and logically.

b) Enhance their delivery skills by learning techniques such as vocal variety, body language awareness, and eye contact to captivate and maintain audience attention.

c) Learn how to create visually appealing and informative slides or other visual aids to complement their presentations.

Workshop Objectives:
    • A systematic approach to reviewing their writing to become more aware of areas where it needs revision and editing.
    • A structured approach to revising their work to improve its focus, organization, development, grammar and vocabulary
    • Using a checklist for peer feedback on written work.

    • Provide participants with the foundational knowledge and skills necessary for writing effective business letters
    • Enhance participants’ email writing skills, enabling them to communicate effectively, professionally, and efficiently through email.
    • Provide participants with the fundamental knowledge and skills required to write business proposals and develop practical writing techniques to enhance their proposal writing skills.

2) Discuss good practices for creating effective oral presentations. Moreover, the workshop will also include many activities and discussions.

Day 2: 23 September from 9:30 – 11:30

Workshop objectives:

    1. Review the basics of conducting oral presentation including introduction, body, closing, Q&A and tips on creating visual aid.Audiences will present

    2. a persuasive presentation while using visual aid.

    3. Audiences will receive constructive feedback on their persuasive presentation.

Oral Communication Workshop Objectives

    • Students will develop the ability to speak spontaneously and coherently in English on a given topic by:
      • Exploring small talk topics: weather, entertainment, food, hobbies, etc.
      • Recognizing importance of listening and asking follow up questions
    • Students will build fluency and confidence through the use of appropriate language in workplace and school situations by:
      • Practicing common phrases and idioms used in workplace and school conversations
      • Focusing on collocations of do, make, have, take

Day 1 [ February 11, 2023 from 4:00 – 6:00 PM]

Workshop details: The first session will commence with an introduction in mastering an oral presentation. Students will be taught all the basics and tips on creating an introduction, body and closing for presentations. The workshop will also touch on body language tips for presentations and techniques will be provided by the instructor.

Workshop objectives:

1) Identify the important elements of creating effective oral presentations including introduction, body and closing of presentations.

2) Discuss good practices for creating effective oral presentations. Moreover, the workshop will also include many activities and discussions.

Day 2 [February 18, 2023 from 4:00 – 6:00 PM]

Workshop details: The second workshop will be more advanced. It will prepare the students for Q&A session. Tips on managing Q&A will be shared and good practices on dealing with Q&A will be taught to the students. Students will also be taught how to create effective visual aids. Tips and techniques will be provided to the students. Moreover, the workshop will also include many activities and discussions. Students will get a chance to practice mock session for Q&A and create a draft version of their visual aid.

Workshop objectives:

1) Introduce tips and techniques in dealing with Q&A at the end of presentations.

2) Identify good practices and techniques in dealing with Q&A.

3) Identify good practices and techniques in creating visual aids.

4) Create a short visual aid to receive instant constructive feedback.

Day 3 [February 25, 2023 from 4:00 – 7:00 PM]

Workshop details: The third session will commence with a quick review on the previous workshop sessions. After that, students will be given an opportunity to present their persuasive presentation while using their visual aid. This session will be very hands-on.

Workshop objectives:

1) Review the basics of conducting oral presentation including introduction, body, closing, Q&A and tips on creating visual aid.

2) Students present persuasive presentation while using visual aid.

3) Students receive constructive feedback on their persuasive presentation.

About the Guest Speaker

Yumiko Furuichi

Professor

Prof. Furuichi obtained an M.A. in 2002 and a Ph.D. in 2006 from Ochanomizu University. She has been teaching Japanese language courses in the Division of Global Education for the Graduate School of Engineering at the University of Tokyo since 2002 and responsible for running the courses since 2010. Her expertise is in the fields of Japanese language education and multicultural understanding. As for research, she has published various work on Japanese language education, corpus studies of spoken language in science and engineering, and the international exchange aimed at multicultural understanding.

1) Japanese language: “The First Step to learn Japanese”

Target Participants: AIT students

Maximum # of participants: 40

Objectives:

a) Learn introductory Japanese conversation for easy and immediate communication.

b) Learn the following simple conversation necessary when you come to Japan.

          • About the Japanese language
            • Simple greetings and introducing yourself in Japanese.
            • Ordering meals in the restaurant, etc. (communication strategies)
            • Shopping (Counting the numbers)

2) Japanese Culture: “Let’s get to know Japan”

a) Learn about contemporary Japanese society and feel familiar with Japan.
